How early should you leave for Schiphol from The Hague?

How early you need to leave depends on three things, and you can work them out separately. Two of them are set out below with real figures. The third, the check-in margin, isn't something you decide yourself and is covered further down.

Step one: decide what time you want to be at the departure hall. That's your flight time minus the check-in margin your airline and Schiphol recommend for your flight.

Step two: subtract the driving time from The Hague to Schiphol. That runs between 27 and 34 minutes, depending on the time of day. The table in the next section gives it by time band.

Step three: add ten minutes for loading luggage and getting in. That's the moment your taxi needs to be at the door. Future Taxi arrives five minutes before the agreed time as standard, so part of that margin is already built in.

The distance from The Hague Central Station to Schiphol is 43 kilometres, almost always via the A4 motorway. That doesn't change. The driving time does, but less than most people expect.

The times below come from the same Google traffic data that powers the price estimate on this site, measured for an ordinary Tuesday. They account for the expected congestion at each departure time.

Say you want to be at the departure hall at 07:00. That falls in the morning peak, so you count on 33 minutes of driving. Seven o'clock minus 33 minutes is 06:27, minus ten minutes for loading is 06:17. Your taxi is then at the door at around 06:15.

The table below does that sum for a range of arrival times. You pick the left-hand column yourself, based on your flight time and check-in margin.

In the table, for an arrival at 05:00 or 06:00 the taxi is at the door before 06:00. Those rides can't be booked online, because the booking form works with departure times between 06:00 and 23:00.

Call or message us for an early ride like that, and do it during the day. At night or just before an early morning the driver's schedule is often already set, and a new ride for that slot usually can't be added.

The check-in margin is the one number in this sum we can't give you. It varies by airline, by destination and by season.

A flight within the Schengen area with no checked baggage needs less preparation than an intercontinental flight where you drop off suitcases and pass through passport control. In the summer holidays and around public holidays the security queues run longer than on a quiet Tuesday in November.

Schiphol and your airline both publish current guidance. Check it for your flight rather than relying on a rule of thumb, and add that number to step one.

Online bookings are possible between 06:00 and 23:00, with at least three hours' notice for a same-day ride.

For an early flight there's one more thing. If you book a ride late in the evening or at night for the next morning before 09:00, the driver's schedule for that first slot is often already set. The form then points you to phone or WhatsApp.

The practical conclusion: if you need to leave before 09:00, arrange the taxi during the day, the day before. That isn't a sales tactic, it's simply why a late booking for the early morning regularly can't be accommodated.

The fare does not shift with the time of day. To Schiphol a fixed price of €120.00 applies, at 05:00 in the morning just as at the busiest moment of the day.

Seven extra minutes of traffic therefore cost you nothing. With an ordinary metered price it would be different: there, every minute standing still lands in the amount.

So don't shift your departure time to save money. Shift it because you need those seven minutes.

The return route is slightly longer, 44 kilometres, and the pattern flatter. Around midday the ride takes 35 to 36 minutes, in the evening peak around 17:30 it rises to 40 minutes, and after 22:00 you're home in 31 minutes. The fare is the same €120.00 as the outbound ride.
